USB Device Not Recognized....?

Postby pamthereader » Wed Mar 02, 2011, 5:52 pm   [Post 1]

Help, please. I have a refurbished PRS-600 that until JUST NOW...was working perfectly and has done for the last many months. Just now, after recharger by wall charger (but that's been done before many many...too) I set everything up to sync in some new books from my eLibrary. The message is that the USB Device is not recognized...I know its not the USB port itself, I've switched my mouse control back and forth to test and all is going well. I've restarted the computer; I've turned OFF the computer and walked away for awhile. Ebook is working fine. ELibrary is working fine but the device (eBook?) is not recognized.

I am such a dork on this...what do I do now? I am presuming its something on the eBook side just because of the source of the question. Thanks so much for where you can send me or whatever you can advise.

Pam, have you tried connecting the Reader to a different USB port? What another device or peripheral does in any given USB port doesn't necessarily factor in to the extent that you can assume it's definitely not the port. Once you've ruled that out, the next thing to rule out would be the cable. If you have another from a camera or whatever, try that. If you're then sure it's neither the cable nor the USB port, make sure there aren't any updates for the device or the Library software, in fact, you should do that anyway. If everything is up-to-date, a reset would probably be in order. To reset it, just so you're aware, don't just press and release the reset button inside the hole. Press and hold it for a slow count of five before you release. Then turn it on and try connecting it again.

Pam, if you call Sony's customer support line, they can uninstall and reinstall the drivers by remote access. Maybe you've got a corrupt driver so it can no longer tell your computer and Sony how to play along nicely.

You can either get live chat support on their website, or there's a number to call for priority service from service reps who are Reader specialists:

Thanks to both of you...as it turns out, shortly after I wrote that note my eBook sort of did a dipsy do about turning off...asking me if I wanted to 'do' that - so I went to the actual 'turn off' command and did that, then turned it back on again..you know - that waiting message then comes up (to me, always indicting 'something' is 'happening'. Just what that was was not clear but following very carefull the sequencing to connect to my pc - a) turn on eBook b) plug ebook in and do NOT open eLibrary...at any rate, everything worked so I think my little book just got itself a bit confused and didn't send the right signals.

I love the responses from each of you sending me the message ....'slow and steady' , Pam. Exactly what I did need. Ta!

I'm glad it all worked out easily. Hope you're deep into a good book as I type.
